The original O'Malley Fabrics still trades in Ballina, County Mayo, where my mother Anne has kept the door open — and the kettle on — since 1984.

A fabric shop and sewing room on the banks of the River Moy. Bolts of Irish linen, Donegal tweed, and lace stacked floor to ceiling — and a counter where half the town's wedding dresses, communion gowns, and confirmation suits have been pinned, taken in, and let out for nearly five decades.

The American chapter of the same story. I grew up threading needles under my mother's worktable; today I run a by-appointment studio serving the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area — with linen and tweed shipped across the Atlantic from the original shop's shelves.
